Real Protection
What is really needed to protect our school children?
Making our kids' schools safe is not difficult and does not require taking weapons from law abiding citizens. Think about this a moment and you will agree that the only components of real protection are...
1. Protection must be close at hand in the classroom (not delayed in arriving).
When seconds count, the police or SRO are only minutes away. 911 is too late.
2. Protection must be powerful enough to quickly stop even a large man who has a deadly weapon.
He came to kill. Stop him before he does. Stop him quickly and completely.
3. Protection must be able to be executed by even a small-framed, physically-weak person.
Hand guns are magnificent equalizers.
4. Protection must be safe and not produce fear in the children.
Out of sight, out of mind.
5. Protection is proportional to participation.
You can easily steal honey from a hive guarded by three or four bees. Having 1000 bees is called deterrence. Make your school a thousand-bee hive (arm as many as possible).
6. Protection is the product of overwhelming strength in the hands of good people.
Never let the killer have control of your school. Not for one second.
The only form of protection that meets these criteria is to arm the teachers with powerful handguns secreted on their person. This is called concealed carry, and it works well, as recent history has shown. Consider that there are 42 school districts in Utah, 25,615 teachers, and over 1/2 million students, and that Utah teachers, as of 2014, have been allowed to conceal carry in the schools for over 13 years. There have been zero school shootings and no firearm incidents.
A new concern. Recent mass killing in schools have been performed by young men who use a rifle and wear a bullet resistant ballistic vest. This makes stopping the killer more difficult since a pistol will not penetrate the vest. Teachers will have to practice head shots to get past the vest and stop the killer quickly, and leg shots to try to immobilize the killer. School systems will need to consider providing rifles for some teachers with optical sights that will allow stopping the killer at some distance away. The killers use of a vest and rifle has allowed him to defeat school guards who only had a pistol.
